    Overview
A new landmark of contemporary architecture
NiuShouShan is located in Jiangning District, within the southern suburban scenic area of Nanjing.
The mountain gets its name from its two prominent peaks at the summit, which face each other and resemble a pair of ox horns. It is also colloquially known as "Niushoushan" (Ox Head Mountain). During the Eastern Jin Dynasty, Wang Dao, the Prime Minister, persuaded Emperor Yuan, Sima Rui, who was in the early stages of establishing his regime, to abandon his plan to build a pair of watchtowers (symbolizing imperial power) outside the palace. Instead, Wang Dao invited the emperor to ride out of the Xuanyang Gate and gaze southward at NiuShouShan. Struck by the spectacular sight of the two peaks facing each other, Wang Dao seized the opportunity to advise, "These are the Heavenly Watchtowers! Why bother building artificial ones!" Thus, the mountain also earned the name "Tianque Mountain" (Heavenly Watchtower Mountain).
NiuShouShan boasts a picturesque natural ecosystem and has long been celebrated as a premier spring destination. Rich in historical and cultural heritage, it is home to the Hongjue Temple Pagoda, the ancient military fortifications of Yue Fei’s resistance against the Jin Dynasty, and the Tomb of Zheng He. The mountain also carries a profound and enduring Buddhist legacy. During the Tang Dynasty, Chan Master Farong, revered as the "Bodhidharma of the East," founded the Ox Head Zen School right here.
As a major cultural project during Nanjing’s 12th Five-Year Plan period, the NiuShouShan Cultural Tourism Zone is centered around the permanent enshrinement of the Buddha’s Parital Bone Relic, the supreme sacred relic in global Buddhism. Positioned as a "new heritage of world Buddhist culture and a new landscape of contemporary architectural art," the scenic area is dedicated to creating three ultimate realms: ecology, culture, and leisure, built upon the deep exploration of its natural, cultural, and tourism resources.
